As a parent, and adult who loves to snack, I am constantly on the hunt for easy snack recipes. The kid and I love to munch throughout the day and this trail mix recipe for kids is JUST the snack for us.

It has everything. You get a salty crunch from mixed nuts or crackers and a little sweetness from raisins and chocolate chips! The best part is that you can easily make your own in as little as 5 minutes with items already in your pantry!

What is usually in trail mix?

I have seen SO many trail mix varieties, but we like to stick with the classic. In this version we have nuts, raisins, chocolate candies, and pretzels. Honestly, it is the best cheap trail mix recipe.

Side note, our pretzels are filled with peanut butter. Probably not necessary, but we looooooove this version. Pick up a bag for yourself from Trader Joe’s for $1.99 (not sponsored. Just a tasty snack).

What can you put into trail mix?

EVERYTHING. You can literally open up your pantry and start throwing anything into a bag to make trail mix. I mean, within reason. Here are a few fun things we like to use:

  • sunflower seeds
  • cashews
  • almonds
  • peanuts
  • pecans
  • dried fruit
  • goldfish crackers or any baked cheese crackers
  • dry cereal
  • pretzels
  • small candies or chocolate chips

Ladies, ladies……please do not forget about taking care of yourself after the hard work of cooking and preparing meals all day….get the babies down for the evening and pop a cork of wine…..I love dark chocolate or just about any chocolate with my wine, I drink Moscato. Sweet and yet delicate (box kind)….its cheaper this way….so sit back after a long day of working and do some pampering yourself. By the way, I always take along nail polish and remover, its fun to get other women together and paint nails while sipping on some delic wine!

    Happy Camping!

There was a recipe on the Golden Graham’s box years ago, for S’mores (Rice Krispie) treats. I’m sure it is still out there, but the gist of it is: melt the chocolate chips with the marshmallows and some butter, stir in the Golden Grahams, press into a buttered pan. Yummy!

I’m always looking for healthy snack ideas for my 3 year old daughter so this summer I created a healthy trail mix. The whole family loves it and it travels well. I make a big batch in a large resealable container and then pour into a smaller travel container for quick outings (trips to the Zoo, amusem*nt parks, etc.) I use the following organic ingredients:

    Unsalted Almonds
Nature’s Path Blueberry Cinnamon Flax Cereal
    Naturally sweetened Cranberries and Raisins
    Soy Nuts
    Cheerios

    Occassionally I also add:

    Banana Chips
    Unsweetened Dried Apple Rings
    Goldfish crackers

We are retired and on a budget too, so all your ideas are great. After cooking all these years, (54 at last count) we love to try something different! The one we love is crustless pumpkin. We mix up the pie filling and bake it in a 9 x 13 pan. Serve with whipped cream and we don’t even miss the crust. Easier and healthier too. It’s one of our staples now !!!
