Students can access Wi-Fi on campus and at other University campuses using Eduroam. Find out how to connect and access Eduroam to access the internet, email and other university resources.

Current students can use Eduroam to access Wi-Fi on campus at Charles Sturt University. Eduroam also allows visitors from participating institutions wi-fi access when visiting Charles Sturt University too.

With Eduroam, you can use any Wi-Fi capable device (e.g. laptop, netbook, iPad, mobile phone, iPod) to connect and access university network resources and services, including internet and printing.

Eduroam covers 99% of buildings, outdoor areas and student residences at the following campuses:

  • Albury-Wodonga
  • Bathurst
  • Canberra
  • Dubbo
  • Goulburn (School of Policing Studies)
  • Orange
  • Port Macquarie (Major Innes Rd and Munster Street)
  • Wagga Wagga (Main and South)
  • Wangaratta

Eduroam (educational roaming) gives you access to wi-fi services at participating educational and research institutions too.

How to access Wi-Fi (Eduroam)

To install eduroam on a device:

Students and staff

  1. Select the eduroam SSID
  2. Enter your university login in the format username@student.csu.edu.au
  3. Support and configuration information can be found at wireless.csu.edu.au

Visitors to Charles Sturt University

  1. Select the eduroam SSID
  2. Enter the login and password as provided by your institution
  3. For further help please contact your home institution. A list of participating institutions and their support links can be found at https://www.eduroam.edu.au/eduroam-for-users/

Manually configuring your device

If you prefer, you can manually configure your device using the settings below. However we strongly recommend you use the configuration wizard

Eduroam settings

  • SSID: edurom
  • Security type: WPA2 (enterprise)
  • Encryption type: TKIP
  • Network authentication method: Protected EAP (PEAP)
  • PEAP inner authentication method: Secured Password (EAP-MSCHAP v2)
  • Validate server certificate: Off

You can connect any device that supports 802.11n (and the faster 802.11ac) wi-fi standards. If you have an older device without wi-fi capability, you can purchase wireless network adapters from local electronic and computer retailers or online.

Accessing eduroam after installation

Once you have installed eduroam, your device will automatically connect to eduroam when you are in range of the network.

If your device is connected to eduroam - it is ready to connect to eduroam at a participating institution.

If you have not connected your device (or deleted the wi-fi settings) - it will need to be configured, and selecting eduroam

Authenticate your login details at a participating institution by using the following:

  • Username: username@student.csu.edu.au
  • Password: your Charles Sturt University password

Note: each institution handles the availability of its eduroam network on its campus. Other institutions are responsible for the ability to authenticate their students when visiting Charles Sturt University.

Password changes

The next time your device tries to connect after a password change, it will ask for your university login details. Enter your username and new password to connect to eduroam (do not close this prompt without entering your new password). Your device will continue to connect until your next password change.

Wi-Fi connection speeds

Eduroam supports the following speeds:

  • 802.11ac allows speeds of 433Mbps to 1.3Gbps
  • 802.11n at 5GHz allows speeds of up to 300Mbps
  • 802.11n at 2.4GHz allows speeds of up to 150Mbps
  • 802.11g at 2.4GHz allows speeds of up to 54Mbps

Your network connection speed will vary depending on:

  • Distance from a wireless access point
  • Number of people connected to the same access point as you
  • Other wireless devices near you
  • Protocol and band used by your device when connecting

Privacy and security

When you connect to eduroam using your personal device you are connecting to a shared network.

This will enable you to connect and collaborate with your fellow students in many ways.

To protect your personal information when using public shared networks:

  1. Ensure your devices are up to date with the latest patches
  2. Ensure you have a current antivirus/malware software package installed. Sophos antivirus protection is available free for all students
  3. Turn on or install a personal firewall on your device
  4. Turn off file and printer sharing on your device
  5. Exercise care when surfing to web sites of a suspicious nature
  6. Never provide your credentials (username and password) to anyone
